Subject: Fwd: Reform thong?

June 26, 2007

Speaker O’Brien
Rep. DeWeese
Rep. Smith

Gentlemen:

It appears as if the reform rules' train has been derailed. Substance is important, but rules were not made to be broken.

When a member votes incorrectly - changing a vote - it is my understanding they do it by correcting the record. Or perhaps filing for a reconsideration. Neither was done last night by Rep. Buxton. Instead, the Speaker abolished the vote, and then attempted to accept a reconsideration motion. However, as Rep. Smith noted, "How do you reconsider something that wasn't done?" The middle act of this perverse drama was followed by a motion to move to the previous question.

You can't abuse the process at night and champion reform during the day.  When the votes don’t go your way, you shouldn't be able to "finesse" the rules.

You can either preserve the past or protect the future. But you can’t do both. Please restore order, respect the will of the voters, and be true to the spirit and substance of reform.

Sleepwalking into the future is not an option. Please place the reform process back on track.

Sincerely,
